Hands on training on “Detection of Potential Fishing Zones”

Due to Coronavirus lock down, NAFcoast organized an online training course on "Detection of Potential Fishing Zones" for the project partners from Tunisia, Mauritania and Morocco.

1.     The first training to Tunisia represented by  a team from Le Centre d'Etudes et de Recherche des Télécommunications (CERT) and Mauritania represented by  a team from Le Centre d'Etudes et de Recherche des Télécommunications (CERT) was held on from 13-15 April 2020.

2.     The second training to Morocco represented by  a team from Université Chouaib Doukali (UCD) Team was held on 18-19 May 2020.

Course overview

The coarse aims at functioning the Earth observation technologies to detect and map fishing zones in North coast Africa (Mediterranean Sea region). The coarse helps the trainees to understand the basics behind using earth observations to monitor the oceanography parameters such as sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-A) In addition to map and detect the potential fishing zones based on the suitable environmental conditions of each fish species. It also helps the trainees to download the SST and Chl-A data from sentinel 3 and MODIS sensors, and visualize it on SNAP tool or Arc GIS. This will improve the team capabilities in detection of potential fishing zones using satellite observation.
